Skimpy Prom Dress Incident

Should their be a dress code at school proms?
Yes, because some items are appropriate enough to be worn in school and some items violate the dress code.

In a recent story on CNN.com, Marche Taylor of Madison High School, age 17 tried to enter into her prom with a customed made prom dress. When she tried to enter the prom a school sponsor stopped her because she was violating the prom dress code, and accused of not wearing any undergarments.

In this case Marche Taylor's dress was not classy at all for a senior prom. Her only two options was to leave the prom or go to jail. I think going to jail was a little extreme on the school's part, but being asked to leave was an appropriate decision by the school.

You can still consider yourself sexy with some clothes on. It doesn't take much for guys to get the wrong idea or try something... be responsible for yourself and your body.

Teen Pregnancy Awareness

Teen pregnancy is an issue that is familiar to us all. It has been affecting the young women of Milwaukee, WI most frequently.

Their is a dying need for the young women of Milwaukee to take a stand on their sexuality and understand that their are other options to prevent themselves from becoming pregnant.
What happened to parents teaching their children about sex and teen pregnancy?

Have we lost all of our young women to teen pregnancy, and are parents to blame?
No, not yet. The Milwaukee area is partnering with different organizations like the United Way, the Milwaukee Public Library and Milwaukee Public Schools to make this a city matter. Parents and teens both need to take responsibility of their lives and do everything in their power to protect themselves and become aware of the consequences that can occur if they continue to be sexually active.

This month is Teen Pregnancy Prevention month. Milwaukee has one of the highest teen birth rates. At 16.7 percent of all Milwaukee births in 2005 were to mothers under age 20.

I would like to see teens take more pride in their bodies and their lives. No one plans to have a baby, but their are ways to prevent it from happening. What happened to abstinence and waiting till your ready? For some this may be hard, but at least if your going to engage in sexual activities be smart about it, use protection.

The best advice that I can give: is be abstinent, if you are not willing to wait, protect yourself!!

The line that divides black and white

I've come to the relization that I still live in a society where RACE does matter.

I'm upset at the recent article that was posted in the Milwaukee Community Journal on May 7, 2008. The Article is on Blacks smoking marijuana in Wisconsin and being locked up.
Has Wisconsin only been locking up blacks for marijuana possesion?
Yes, their is a racial disparity in WI and in the criminal justice system.

Discrimination is alive and in full affect here in WI. Milwaukee ranks in as one of the largest segregated cities in the Nation. That's not enough to say that now we are dealing with more blacks being incarcerated for drug possesions.

Nationally, black men are 12 times more likely to be imprisoned for drugs than whites in a recent study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Multiply that figure by four if you're referincing Wisconsin. The black community is being targeted, while the white suburban people are running around free with misdeameanors, and tickets.
We are in need of some serious help, here in Wisconsin! It is time for an intervention and something to be done. I am tired of hearing about another black person being put in jail for drug possesion. Let's not ignore the problem, we need to fight the justice system and get drugs off the street before the drugs rule the street.

Frustration at the Gas Pumps

A problem that seems to be frustrating everyone is...
HIGH GAS PRICES
.

Are politicians really doing everything they can to lower gas prices?
No, but they are working to implement a Gas Tax Holiday.

The Gas Tax Holiday would help drivers save more when they go to the pumps during the holiday months. As Memorial Day seems to be approaching very soon, this Gas Tax Holiday could really help out a lot of people.

Here in Milwaukee, WI to fill up is now $3.79 and in some places $3.89. These prices are insane. Am I going to have to result to taking the bus? Yes, If the prices continue to rise. I remember those days when you could go to the pumps and fill your tank with just $10 to $20 dollars now its taking $30-$40 plus to fill up the tank.

Just so that you are aware prices are expected to reach a ridiculous price this summer, and continue to rise if something is not done. Emotions are getting intense across the nation, first the rise in gas prices, now food... what's next?

People its time for us to change our lifestyle and start relaying on the basics of life:
  • food
  • water
  • shelter.
Oops... I forgot, food prices are too high!

Check out this cool video on YouTube of how to get around high gas prices, let me leave you with some words of advice: Don't Get Caught!! (title of video: High Gas Prices, here is a way around-funny video)

No more buses for Milwuakee Public School Students

The Milwaukee School board has been debating several issues now, for the past few months, concerning the education of MPS students, the lack of funding that is needed for schools and now cutting buses from the Milwaukee Public School System.

Will the decision of cutting buses better the Milwaukee Public School System?

No, it will only cause more problems between the relationships of students, parents and administration. Many students will be out of a reliable source of transportation to and from school.

I am appalled at the decision made by MPS to cut the buses from students.

How are school board officials looking out for the best interest of students, when they are taking away one of their resources. I am so tired of hearing this debate between the school board and public officials over the same issues, we have yet to see results.

A reason for eliminating the bus system will allow for money to go back into neighborhood schools, the arts program and after-school activities. According to the article in the Journal Sentinel online, "Black Kids on buses may slip into MPS lore", by Eugene Kane, he states that MPS provides busing for 55,000 students a day at a cost of $57 million annually.

The school system figures that money could be used to:
  • strengthen neighborhood schools
  • re-open several north side schools
  • provide art and music programs in those areas

My concern is that MPS is trying to segregate black kids from other students. Schools have been desegregated since 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, why are we going back to the ways of Segregation?

Did we not learn anything, we are supposed to be EQUAL!

Cutting buses leaves many parents with fewer options. Already many of the neighborhood schools have been closed, now you want to take away busing, what's next?
